Central Florida Urban League

Our goal is to end generational poverty by empowering Central Floridians to achieve social and economic equality through education, employment and entrepreneurship.

About

The Central Florida Urban League has been a pillar in the community for over 40 years, serving more than 75,000 Central Floridians since our inception. Adapting to the new realities in both society and in our community, the CFUL has honed its mission to focus on the Three Es: Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship. These three pillars guide all CFUL programming and initiatives, ensuring that our organization can end generational poverty in our community and beyond.

The programs currently offered by the CFUL include the following:

Financial Literacy Program:

Financial illiteracy is a growing economic and social concern robbing people from achieving the American dream. Despite the rapidly changing, increasingly sophisticated array of financial decisions confronting Central Floridians today, there still exists widespread levels of financial illiteracy—especially among low-income and minority communities. The Central Florida Urban League provides leadership on this critical topic through financial education which helps students & families develop prudent financial habits and create a new generation of informed citizens into the American economy.

Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Program:

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification training prepares adults for entry-level positions in industries like Finance, Technical Support, Education, Sales and Hospitality. Classes offered by the Central Florida Urban League teach students how to create professional-quality financial statements, including budgets and invoices, along with sales presentations, performance charts and employee training manuals.

Entrepreneurship Development Program:

As a community leader, the CFUL recognizes that the onus is on us to assist small business owners, remedy their lives, and in turn, our community.

Through individualized or group sessions, our entrepreneurship program addresses the following five needs of the African American small business community:

  1. Foundation: Creating a proper business structure;
  2. Development: Creating a business plan and adhering to it;
  3. Education: Financial education, structure and security;
  4. Growth: Business development and resources;
  5. Expansion: Scaling upwards.

Registered Behavior Technician Program:

Our Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training Program offers a great opportunity to graduates to start or advance their career in Behavioral Health. This program trains individuals in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is a science that explains how behavior works and how the environment controls it. ABA is a therapy that is recommended for people with Autism, developmental and behavioral disabilities of all ages. In this training program, individuals participate in a hybrid model that includes both online modules and face to face, hands-on opportunities that will help prepare for the RBT certification exam. Upon successful completion of the program and exam, the graduate will be eligible to use their certification in variety of settings such as classrooms, ABA clinics, group homes, and community settings, where ABA services are provided.

Salesforce Administration & Project Management:

The CFUL entered into a partnership with Foundry College to provide our community with access to training programs in the fields of Salesforce Administration and Project Management. As these are two of the most rapidly growing industries, successful graduates will learn the necessary skills to truly compete for high-growth, high-wage jobs in our community and beyond. According to Foundry College, worldwide, more than 22.2 million project management jobs will be added by 2027. Additionally, both certifications have a median annual salary of over $77,000.

CFUL Career Coaching and Financial Literacy Education:

The CFUL offers ongoing career coaching which provides life and soft skills training to our students as well as assist them through the job-seeking process. Furthermore, the CFUL combines our career coaching with Financial Literacy education to ensure that all clients build a proper financial foundation as they begin their new careers. Our Financial Literacy program is anchored by our Meet the Bankers initiative. This program affords unbanked, low-to-moderate income individuals the opportunity to consult one-on-one with a representative from a financial institution in a safe and neutral environment. Often, low-to-moderate income individuals are intimidated by banks and bankers. Beyond empowering participants to establish and pursue their financial goals, the time spent with a banker also leads to the establishment of, or re-establishment of, trust. Our program connects residents of the community with bankers who provide a detailed road map to financial stability and home ownership. Additionally, Financial Literacy workshops teach program participants to develop efficient household budgets, create savings plans, manage debt, formulate strategic investment decisions for themselves and their families, and avoid common pitfalls such as predatory loans.

Youth Navigator Program:

The Central Florida Urban League’s Youth Navigator program provides at-risk youth, between 16 to 24 years of age, with an educational and training bridge to become better prepared for life as an adult. Our program ensures that youth receive both skills training and mentoring to develop into productive members of society. This program mostly serves youth who have committed misdemeanor crimes and youth who have dropped out of school. These students in high-risk environments face many challenges that are barriers for success and the Youth Empowerment Program serves as a catalyst for change. The goal of the program is to prepare youth for entry into the professional world and deter them from engaging in delinquent behavior that could result in adjudication. Youth are paired with a mentor to ensure that they remain on a correct path and are given opportunities including internships, skills training and unsubsidized employment. To ensure their all-around development as young adults, youth are also required to perform community service with community-based organizations.
