EBI: Nonprofit Board Basics: Certificate in Board Orientation

Do you currently serve on a board, are considering joining the board of directors of a nonprofit organization, or are you a nonprofit CEO or executive director working with a board? Do you want to better ensure you are governing correctly?

In this workshop, we will walk you through the legal duties of board membership and discuss the primary responsibilities every board member and board should fulfill in order to lead today’s nonprofit organization successfully. Workshop participants will gain insights to better evaluate the nonprofit governance of their organization and identify potential action items to take back to their board.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore what is legally expected of board members and the full board
  • Learn the roles and responsibilities of an effective and engaged board member
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities between CEO/staff and board
  • Learn how to avoid common pitfalls
  • Learn tips to govern successfully

Instructor: Amie Dugan, MMBA

Amie Dugan, MMBA serves as Vice President, Organizational Development for Special Olympics North America and leads the Organizational Development team which provides guidance and oversight to all SONA Programs (comprised of United States, Canada, Caribbean), ensuring compliance to facilitating the operational and programmatic advancement and excellence of all Programs.

Additionally, some of Amie’s specific areas of specialty include CEO searches and CEO onboarding, executive coaching and leader mentorship, Board Governance training and consultation, organizational capacity building and strategy, strategic planning, leading practices/centers of excellence building, professional and leadership training and development, facilitation, curriculum development, risk management, enterprise risk management, business operations and continuity, crisis communications, brand/communications/marketing, fundraising, special event planning, and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Amie serves as the global leadership and program excellence lead for Special Olympics North America. Prior to this role, she served as the Director of Marketing and Communications for Special Olympics North America from 2012-2017 – a role she established. Prior to that, she served as Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Special Olympics Florida for fourteen years. Having a total of 27 years’ experience with Special Olympics, Amie has experience ranging from the grassroots to international levels.

In those roles Amie oversaw marketing, communications, media, social media, digital media, crisis communications, risk management, brand and more, including national and World Games. She has served on Special Olympics’ global brand task force, co-chaired the United States Leadership Committee’s marketing and communications committee, served as a member of the Special Olympics USA management team, and continues to serve on the Special Olympics (Intl.) Risk Management and Insurance Task Force.

Amie began as a Special Olympics volunteer in 1994 and was inducted into the Special Olympics Florida Hall of Fame in 2011. Prior to Special Olympics, she worked for the Walt Disney World Company and the Juilliard School of Music and has consulted and worked with multiple performing arts organizations.

Amie is a BoardSource certified nonprofit consultant and works with an array of U.S. and international boards. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rollins College and holds a MMBA as well as a certificate in nonprofit management, multiple leadership institute program certificates, and has designed and led numerous Leadership Academies.

Amie is a member of WISE (Women in Sports and Events) – where she has served as a WISE Within mentor and panelist, she’s a member of the Board of Directors for Girls on the Run (Central Florida) and is a member of the Greater Orlando Organizational Development Network and serves on its governance committee.
